Ingredients
  

  • 8 oz penne pasta
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes 15 oz / 425 g
  • 1 cup beef broth 240 ml
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • grated Parmesan cheese for serving
  • fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 3 minutes until translucent.
  • Add the minced garlic and ground beef to the skillet. Cook until the beef is browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer, and let cook for about 10 minutes to combine flavors.
  • Add the cooked penne pasta to the skillet, tossing to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce. Cook together for an additional 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  • Serve hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves if desired.

Notes

For added flavor, consider sautéing some bell peppers or mushrooms with the onions and garlic.
You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
This dish can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheats well in the microwave or on the stovetop.
